This is a prime example of what semanticists call “scalar implicature.” What they are doing is strengthening their statement by saying how great Steven Moffat is by gradually increasing the variation of “special.”
special < very special < someone very special indeedSo by the time they reach “someone very special indeed” they have strengthened it so much to assert that Steven Moffat is someone that is quite spectacular.
Their vocabulary may seem lacking, but what they are doing is quite intelligent indeed. Even if they don’t know it.
Be sure, Benedict knows exactly what he is doing.
